Details of accident
he Sewol ferry, which was heading to Jeju from Incheon Coastal Passenger Terminal, sank on April 16th in waters near Byungpungdo Island, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do. More than 300 died or went missing in this accident, including second-grade students from Danwon High School in Ansan who were on a school trip to Jeju.
One year after the disaster, on April 22nd, 2015, the official announcement of the Sewol ferry's salvage was made, but it was delayed due to technical and cost issues. On March 22nd, 2017, the salvage operation of the Sewol ferry began, and on April 11th, 2017, 1,091 days after the accident, the Sewol ferry was salvaged, and the cause of the accident began to be revealed. At the time of the accident, the Sewol ferry was carrying overloaded cargo, exceeding twice the standard limit, and the cargo securing system was not properly operated. The irresponsible actions of crew members who abandoned passengers and escaped during the accident were also a major cause of the many casualties.
